Building an AI-Powered Skills Discovery Workflow

A reference design for searching skill profiles, matching certifications and keeping a human in charge of screening decisions.

The challenge

Skills and certifications are often distributed across different employee systems. Manual searches can be slow, inconsistent and difficult to audit.

Reference workflow

A low-code workflow can help:

  1. Collect the request and required skills.
  2. Fetch authorized profile data from approved systems.
  3. Normalize certificates, levels and validity dates.
  4. Generate evidence-backed matches.
  5. Route the proposed shortlist to a human reviewer.

Applying AI safely

An LLM can help normalize terminology and summarize why a profile matches a requirement. It should not invent certifications or be the sole decision-maker for consequential employment decisions.

Keep source references, input filters, access-control checks, and reviewer overrides available for auditing.

Security considerations

Use least-privilege credentials and respect employee privacy. Avoid copying personal records into unsecured prompts, logs or external applications. Retention and consent must follow company policy.

Implementation notes

Power Automate Desktop can drive an approved legacy workflow, while a cloud flow can orchestrate notifications and review steps. Validate the platform's supported integrations before relying on browser automation.
